The American Medical Assn. aside (see prior post), some physicians strongly support a public health plan that competes with private insurers.
“The private insurance industry is failing our patients,” said Doctors for America president Vivek Murthy in a conference call hosted by the liberal Center for American Progress. Doctors for America, a grassroots organization, represents 12,000 doctors in 50 states. Granted, that’s not near the AMA’s 250,000 members, but it’s not nothing either.
“We’ve spent the last year or more speaking to physicians across the country and bringing doctors from all 50 states together, and what they’re telling us is that they urgently need health reform and that a well-crafted public option is an important part of a health reform solution,” said Murthy.
